Plunkett is playing his sixth Test, having made his debut in Pakistan |
England paceman Liam Plunkett backed his team to secure a first innings lead against Pakistan, who closed day three at Lord's 119 runs adrift at 409-7. Plunkett, his toes battered after bowling 21 overs, admitted: "We knew they had some good batsmen to come.
"We'll have to get stuck in and get Yousuf out, one or two kept low so hopefully we can get a few wickets.
"We must knock them over as cheaply as possible, go in and get a good score and then stick them back in."
Plunkett claimed an important breakthrough when he bowled Inzamam-ul-Haq around his legs for 69.
That wicket ended a dominant partnership of 173 between the captain and the imperious Mohammad Yousuf, who remained undefeated on 185.
"He steps across," Plunkett observed of Inzamam. "Generally I was trying to bowl off-stump and hit the bank [slope], and it came back and hit leg-stump."

Monty Panesar was unable to extract much turn and failed to take a wicket but Plunkett added: "Hopefully Monty can come into play in the next couple of days and get the ball to spin around."
Plunkett persevered admirably for his 2-78 and said of his day: "I started off a bit rough but the more I bowled the better I felt, the middle session and tonight was better than this morning."
Yousuf, whose wonderful innings kept Pakistan in the game, said he would be targeting his second double century in as many innings against England.
He hit 223 against England in Lahore during the winter and said: "England are a good bowling side but thanks to Allah. He gave me power and good form to make runs against them.
"If Allah wants I must do a double-hundred tomorrow.
"If we make some more runs tomorrow, then hopefully we can get England under pressure.
"They made a lot of runs against us and we were tired after two days, but we played good cricket, me and Inzamam, to make a good position."
