Eng v SL Twenty20 as it happened
TWENTY20 INTERNATIONAL, ROSE BOWL:
Sri Lanka 163 (20 overs) beat England 161-5 (20 overs) by two runs

Sri Lanka beat England by two runs under lights in the Twenty20 international at the Rose Bowl despite a fine Marcus Trescothick innings.

Chasing 164, England started quietly but gathered pace until Trescothick fell for 72 in the penultimate over.

Paul Collingwood took 4-22, the best figures in Twenty20 internationals, as Sri Lanka made 163, but Ed Joyce injured his ankle in the field.

Sanath Jayasuriya's 41 was the top Sri Lankan score and he also took 2-23.

OVER-BY-OVER UPDATES

SRI LANKA WIN BY TWO RUNS

20th over: Fernando bowls the last over and Bresnan gets a leg bye. Jones gets to an in-swinging yorker for a single. Bresnan drives back to the bowler for a dot ball. A flick over gully but it only goes for a single - six needed off two. Swing and a miss by Jones but they gain a leg bye. Bresnan has to hit the last ball for six. He carves it and gains a top edge but it's only worth two and Sri Lanka leap in celebration.

19th over: Bresnan and Jones manage to contrive some scampered singles and leg byes to make it nine needed off the last over. 155-5

WICKET England 152-5 (Trescothick 72)
It has just swung back with the wicket of Trescothick, run out as he belly-flops back into his crease. He looked to sweep, missed, went for a single then changed his mind as Sangakkara ran around to the leg slip area.

18th over: Jones hits his first boundary, clipping Jaysuriya over midwicket and the crowd is growing more raucous as the balance of the game has swung.

17th over: Malinga returns to the attack and maybe England can make use of the extra pace. Jones chops a single to deep backward point as another crowd intruder makes it an even later evening for all concerned. Trescothick digs out a yorker and it flies over cover for four. Banger goes big, hoisting Malinga over deep mid-on, although it bounces just inside the rope. Over long on this time, to the delight of the crowd, all of whom are now up past their bed times. 145-4

16th over: Trescothick's concentration has not been affected by the intruder as he slogs Dilshan for six. 131-4

"We've got a streaker who hasn't taken his clothes off and he refuses to run off the field."
Commentator Jonathan Agnew on TMS

16th over: Trescothick nudges Jayasuriya on the off side for a single to bring up his 50 from 47 balls, relatively subdued in this form of the game and possibly not quite enough. Jones tries a reverse sweep with slightly more success than Dalrymple but gets nothing from it.

The news on Ed Joyce is that he has suffered soft tissue damage in his right ankle but X-rays have shown no fracture.

WICKET England 114-4 (Dalrymple 1)
Is it a sweep? Is it a reverse sweep? Dalrymple doesn't seem to know either and he gets an edge behind. Eminem's Lose Yourself accompanies him back to the dugout.

15th over: Trescothick goes down on one knee and swings Dilshan over midwicket to relieve thge pressure a little. 113-3

WICKET England 108-3 (Collingwood 5)
Collingwood tried to flick the spinner over midwicket but midwicket, skipper Jayawardene, hangs on and England are now in a bit of trouble.

15th over: Off-spinner Dilshan joins the attack looking to copy Jayasuriya's strifling success.

14th over: Trescothick swings and misses at a flat delivery from Jayasuriya and is a bit lucky there but he does well to steer the left-armer through third man to get the required rate back under 10 per over, and prompt the tannoy into a burst of Nirvana's Lithium , which is the last thing England need now. 106-2

13th over: Bowling star Paul Collingwood, who made 46 here against Australia last year, gets off the mark first ball. DROP! Collingwood edges and Dilshan can't hold on to a high chance at backward point. Trescothick gets just his fourth boundary, carving over gully. 97-2

WICKET England 88-2 (Pietersen 17)
Pietersen goes for another big shot, slog-sweeping behind square and Malinga takes a great, diving catch on the boundary.

12th over: Sanath Jayasuriya - Sri Lanka's second-most successful spinner ever - joins the attack with England having been held without a boundary for the last 29 balls. Pietersen goes over the top but they just get two. That's more like it - down the pitch and one bounce for four.

"I'm a huge fan of Kevin Pietersen and he is an adventurous player but please Kevin, just calm down!"
Alec Stewart

11th over: DROP! Pietersen carves Maharoof high in the air to deep cover, where Perera loses it under the lights and puts the chance down. Trescothick pushes a couple to wide third man but the required rate is starting to go up, currently at 7.27, needing 9.33. 80-1

10th over: There is just a bit of movement available under the lights and Pietersen is happy to push and nudge. 72-1

9th over: Maharoof mixes in some slower deliveries and the batsmen swap singles. 65-18th over: Pietersen gets off the mark with a single to end a successful over for Sri Lanka. 61-1

"If there's one criticism of Pietersen it's that he goes for his strokes very early so I just hope he gives himself time to build an innings"
Pietersen's Hampshire team-mate Shaun Udal on TMS

WICKET England 59-1 (Strauss 33)England's new skipper falls, playing around a ball that keeps straight and takes out his middle pole. Enter Kevin Pietersen.

7th over: Maharoof, who starred against England in a one-day international here two years ago, replaces Perera with the field spread. He errs wide, though, and Strauss tucks in with a cut, to the delight of a group of fancy-dressed superheroes on the deep point boundary. 57-0

6th over: Dilhara Fernando, another new arrival for the one-day series, replaces Malinga at the Media Centre End. Trescothick is struggling to time the ball here as the floodlights take full effect. Strauss dashes a single just beating a direct hit from mid on, although it takes the third umpire to confirm. Back on strike he crashes another boundary through the covers. 49-0

5th over: Strauss finds his form with four successive boundaries. He deposits Perera into the crowd with a heave over midwicket, laces him along the ground through midwicket, carves over cover then drives straight down the ground to beat a dashing Jayasuriya. 42-0

4th over: Trescothick gets into the spirit with an improvised low push for four behind point they a crashing back-foot drive that is half-stopped by Kapugedera at cover but still goes for four. It brings Sri Lanka's "flying physio" on with an ice pack and a bandage for the fielder's wrist. 23-0

3rd over: Perera has a half-hearted appeal against Trescothick and Hawkeye shows why as it well very high and down leg side. England must take advantage of the first six overs with the fielders close, otherwise they will be behind the eight ball later. 15-0

2nd over: Lasith "The Slinger" Malinga shares the new ball, unleashing that unorthodox, round-arm action on Twenty20 cricket. It's Malinga's turn to bowl a wide and but he tightens up well to Strauss and there are just three off the over. 10-0

"I'm please to report so far his arm has been quite straight, and while he keeps bowling down the leg side , I don't mind"
Alec Stewart is on Perera watch, keeping an eye on the bowler who was reported for throwing on his last tour to England in 2002

1st over: Ruchira Perera starts with a wide then there are leg byes as he sprays the other side of the wicket. Trescothick hooks to make the first runs off the bat a cracking boundary. 7-0

2108 BST: It looks like England will get to face 20 overs as they chase 164 to win, despite the delays. Andrew Strauss is promoted to open in place of the injured Joyce.

"I just came on and thought I had to take the pace off the ball. It can go either way in that situation - you could get smashed but thankfully I took wickets. To come on and take four wickets - I'm chuffed."
Collingwood interviewed on TMS

WICKET Sri Lanka 163 all out (Fernando 3)
Fernando plays and misses at the last ball of the innings and Jones just has to lob to the non-striker's end for Plunkett to remove the stumps.

WICKET Sri Lanka 161-9 (Malinga 13)
Plunkett finds Malinga's splice and it flies high in the air for Bell to take at mid on.

20th over: Plunkett gets the final over, and Malinga's swing brings three as Pietersen fumbles.

"Perera used to throw it when he bowled, he needs to throw it with the bat when he comes in."
Alec Stewart on TMS

19th over: Malinga slogs Mahmood over cover for a boundary to end the innings. It looks like England will only get to face 19 overs after missing the 2046 BST cut-off. The deadline was extended 16 minutes after Joyce's injury. 158-8

WICKET Sri Lanka 154-8 (Kapugedera 22)
Kapugedera flays Mahmood to deep extra cover, where Pietersen takes a catch down on one knee.

19th over: With the clock ticking, England are no-balled for only having three men in the fielding circle. Malinga is the third batsman in the innings to stop a bowler in his run-up, which won't help England's bid to beat the time deadline. Mahmood finally realises time is short and runs to the end of his run up but it looks too late now.

18th over: Plunkett is bowling short with good effect and Malinga has to use scoops, this one to third man for a couple. Umpire Ian Gould narrowly escapes as a straight drive from Kapugedera goes like a bullet at waist height. Gould leaps in the air with his legs apart and everyone has a little chuckle. 151-7

"I've been derisive of England's attempts at floodlit cricket but these lights are pretty useful."
Commentator Jonathan Agnew on TMS

17th over: Lasith Malinga is the new batsman. England have until 2046 BST to begin their last over. Otherwise they could lose an over when they are batting. Mahmood returns after his first two overs went for 23. The Rose Bowl floodlights are beginning to take effect for the first time in any game as the sun dips behind the stands.

WICKET Sri Lanka 136-7 (Maharoof 21)
There is utter chaos with appeals for Maharoof to be run out at both ends but the first appeal, by Bell's direct throw from mid on, is judged a success.

16th over: Plunkett returns and Kapugedera goes over the top for a cracking six, hitting the sightscreen in front of the pavilion.

15th over: Harmison is being bowled out, meaning one of the youngsters will have to bowl at the death. He keeps them to ones and twos, although there is another wide thrown in. Sub fielder Ball makes an outstanding sliding stop at deep midwicket to end the over. 126-2

WICKET Sri Lanka 117-6 (Sangakkara 21)
Collingwood takes his third wicket from a full toss as Sangakkara flicks straight to short midwicket. Collingwood's 4-22 are the best figures ever in a Twnety20 international.

14th over: Collingwood bowls his final over and Sangakkara has to resort to straight scoop shots over the fielders at mid-on and mid-off.

13th over: Harmison returns to the attack and Sangakkara uses the pace of the ball to help it over square leg for four. Sangakkara plays and misses but still looks for a single and Geraint Jones looks a bit silly as he fumbles the ball then misses with the throw. 111-5

WICKET Sri Lanka 102-5 (Arnold 7)
Arnold swings and misses at a knee-high full toss that takes out his middle stump and Collingwood takes his third wicket. He looks made for this form of the game.

12th over: Arnold slices Collingwood to midwicket for three to bring up the 100.

11th over: Sangakkara, who has a strike rate of 200 in this form of cricket, sweeps fine for four. New batsman Russel Arnold gets off the mark with a push and Sangakkara gets the chance to loft a full toss over midwicket. 95-4

WICKET Sri Lanka 84-4 (Dilshan 2)
Dalrymple takes his second international wicket as Dilshan looks to cut and gets an edge to keeper Jones.

WICKET Sri Lanka 84-3 (Jayasuriya 41)
A low full toss from Collingwood hits Jayasuriya, possibly in line with leg stump, and umpire Ian Gould sends him on his way.

10th over: Collingwood is bowling slow right arm, looping it up with the wicket-keeper standing up and challenging the batsmen to attack. They are generally declining the invitation.

Anywhere around 30-32 in your four overs is a great effort in Twenty20 cricket - the scores have gone up over the last few years
England Test spinner Shaun Udal on TMS

9th over: There's another run out chance and they turn to the TV umpire for another decision. That Jaws theme precedes a Not Out sign for Jayasuriya. Jayasuriya swings square and Pietersen can't get to it as he dives and sticks one hand out. 82-2

WICKET Sri Lanka 75-2 (Jayawardene 0)
Dalrymple joins the attack with immediate success. Jayasuriya nudges to short third man and declines the single but Mahela Jayawardene is dashing in from the non-striker's end and can't turn in time. The TV replay shows him a yard short as Dalrymple removes the stumps.

"You forget how hectic these Twenty20 matches really are."
Jonathan Agnew

WICKET Sri Lanka 75-1 (Tharanga 34)
Tharanga looks to thrash through the off side but gets an inside edge to a slower ball and nicks onto his leg stump. He walks off to Tom Jones' Sex Bomb.

8th over: Paul Collingwood replaces Plunkett. Tharanga sweeps to fine leg for four to the strains of Nivana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Colly has an appeal turned down, hitting the pad just outside off.

7th over: The fielding restrictions are relaxed but it makes no difference as Jayasuriya hooks a no ball for six. There's a free hit available after a no ball in this form of the game and Jayasuriya takes a step back and looks to sweep over fine leg, unsuccessfully. Mahmood's figures currently read 1.1-0-21-0. The never-reticent Pietersen is fielding at deep backward square leg with those England flags still painted on his face.

6th over: Plunkett replaces Harmison and Tharanga welcomes him with a straight, one-bounce four to bring up the 50 from 31 balls, then a thrash through the covers for another boundary. A terrible throw in from Dalrymple at cover allows an extra run. 58-0

5th over: Sajid Mahmood arrives at the Media Centre End after Bresnan's two overs yielded 20 runs. Tharanga has a big swing-and-miss at the first ball and the crowd groan as they did when Peter Crouch almost hit the corner flag with that shot. Tharanga makes amends, though, just like Crouch, with a crashing cover drive for four then a hook behind square for six. 46-0

The news on Joyce is that he has a partial dislocation of the right ankle and a possible fracture. Sixteen minutes will be added to the England innings after the delay, so it goes on to 2046 BST.

4th over: Harmison is in fine form - no sign of the leg-side wides that plagued him early against Ireland. Jayasuriya drives into the covers for three. A bumpy square is causing problems for the close fielders, Dalrymple fumbling one at point. Harmison lets a wide go down the off side at 70mph - typed too soon. Bresnan makes a sliding stop at fine leg to save a boundary. 33-0

You can be an experienced bowler bowling to Jayasuriya and he can destroy you. On debut it's even more difficult but hopefully for Bresnan he can come back.
Former England great Alec Stewart summarising on TMS

3rd over: Bresnan resumes, Jayasuriya chops to point and Collingwood fields sharply but his throw just misses the stumps and hits Pietersen. Jayasuriya cuts a couple of wider balls for four, the second a little more uppish. Fourth ball is short and hooked over deep square leg for six. This is becoming a nightmare debut for the Yorkshireman. 25-0

"That is a rather sad exit for Joyce as he leaves in an ambulance. Middlesex and Ireland supporters will be very sad to see him go."
TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew

1930 BST: An ambulance is driven onto the outfield to pick up Joyce as yet another player joins England's injury list.

1928 BST: The players have all returned to their dugouts on the edge of the boundary. It looks like there isn't a stretcher in the entire ground. Finally Conway puts and arm around Joyce's neck and helps him off.

1925 BST: It looks like Joyce may have injured his right ankle as he landed on the side of his foot. Physio Dean Conway dashes out and there is a tractor on the field to take him off. Geraint Jones is arguing with a member of the crowd, and alerts a steward. Perhaps someone has had a bit too much to drink and lost his sense of humour.

2nd over: Steve Harmison opens from the Pavilion End, getting some good bounce from the off and Tharanga edges the first delivery just in front of slip.

DROP! Jayasuriya gets an edge high in the air to third man, where Joyce runs round but he fails to take the catch leaping high in the air and then crumples in agony, calling immediately for the physio. 10-0

1st over: Debutant Tim Bresnan is in at the deep end as he opens the bowling to 1996 World Cup winner Sanath Jayasuriya. He starts with a wide, inauspiciously. Jayasuriya pushes a single then there are two more wides from the all-rounder described by one pundit this week as "Mark Ealham-like". Upul Tharanga gets off the mark with a slice to third man before Bresnan finds his radar. 5-0

1911 BST: As they make their way onto the outfield, England are on a roll in Twenty20 cricket having won their last match in this format by 100 runs, erm, 12 months ago against Australia at this same venue.

1907 BST Here's an interesting stat for those of you who don't think it's too sunny to wear an anorak: In the six Twenty20 internationals that have been played worldwide all of them have been won by the team winning the toss - four batting first and two chasing.

"Didn't realise that England were playing cricket tonight after the football!!! I can see a right session coming on!!!"
Ron Burgundy on the TMS message Board

1855 BST The atmosphere is electric at the Rose Bowl - that's the home of Hampshire cricket near Portsmouth rather than the 105,000 capacity American football stadium in Southern California that laid claim to the name 100 years ago.

They're not quite into cricket mode yet, though, but celebrating England's 2-0 World Cup win in Nuremberg.

Home town hero Kevin Pietersen will have to put on a show tonight to overshadow those late fireworks as England qualified for the second round.

South African-born Pietersen was sporting England flags face-painted on his cheeks as the players watched the big screens from the dressing-room balcony.

1800 BST: The coin toss takes place between halves in England's football match, Mahela Jayawardene winning it and deciding to bat first. Tim Bresnan has been handed his England debut in place of Chapple, with Kevin Pietersen back on his home ground.

A little surprisingly, Sri Lanka have left out spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, perhaps reasoning that his troublesome shoulder could do without a dose of crash-bang cricket.

1457 BST: England announce that Glen Chapple will play no part in this match, or the one-day series that follows, because of an abdominal strain.

1345 BST: England had a training session this morning and the news is that Paul Collingwood came through it, proving his recovery from an injury to his left thigh.

England will return to the ground at around 1700 BST, in time to watch the World Cup football in their dressing-room, although they must also go through warm-up routines before the 1915 BST start so they may have to watch the giant screens at the Rose Bowl along with the fans.
