Strauss pleased to begin with win
Andrew Strauss talks tactics with Glen Chapple
Strauss had to use seven bowlers due to injuries in Stormont
Acting England captain Andrew Strauss was pleased to begin the one-day season with a victory by 38 runs over Ireland.

"I really enjoyed it, they are a good bunch, a lot of enthusiasm there and I think we'll keep improving," he said.

"We didn't hit our straps as we would like to but there are a lot of positives and we are pretty happy.

"Tres has done it on numerous occasions and he played the situation extremely well. We have to make sure we can score centuries from numbers one to six."

Trescothick top-scored with 113, his 11th one-day international century, in England's 301-7.

But Strauss pulled a short ball straight to square-leg and departed for just four.

Later, he admitted that Ireland caused his team some problems.

"They played really well and put us under pressure at times, but most of the things we wanted to achieve we did," he said.

Glen Chapple and Paul Collingwood had to leave the field because of injuries, but the captain was hopeful they were not serious.

"We were a little bit hamstrung at the end with a few of our bowlers who had little niggles we want to take care of," Strauss said.

It's the biggest day in Irish cricket and I'm sure our guys will take a lot of memories

Ireland captain Trent Johnston

"Hopefully it was just precautionary and we will have to see how that goes in the next couple of days."

England have five one-day internationals to come against Sri Lanka starting on Saturday at Lord's.

Ireland skipper Trent Johnston was delighted with his team's performance in their historic first one-day international against England.

"It was a fantastic day and I thought our performance in the field, bowling and fielding, was very good.

"Our fielding was exceptional, we got tied down a bit in our innings and probably never recovered but they're a pretty good side.

"We were quietly confident, we've done ourselves proud and I'd like to thank everyone for turning up. It was great to see 7,000 people supporting Irish cricket."

The Australian-born all-rounder praised the resilience of his batsmen, who played out the innings against an England attack featuring pacemen Steve Harmison, Liam Plunkett and Sajid Mahmood.

"One of our strengths is that we bat all the way down," he said.

"You have the Mooney boys at 10 and 11, they could probably regularly bat at five and six, but that is something we've worked on."

"It's the biggest day in Irish cricket and I'm sure our guys will take a lot of memories."
