Flintoff suffered the injury during the third Test at Trent Bridge |
Andrew Flintoff has been told to rest his ankle problem for four weeks. The Lancashire all-rounder was ruled out of captaining the side in the one-day series against Sri Lanka after a scan showed bone fragments.
The problem is with his left ankle, the same joint he underwent surgery on early last year to remove a bone spur.
It restricted the number of overs he was able to bowl on day three of the third Test against Sri Lanka, which England lost by 134 runs.
England team doctor Peter Gregory said: "We have taken advice from two leading ankle surgeons.
"They both agree that these (fragments) may not be contributing to Andrew's symptoms and that surgery would cause more trauma, and the potential for more scarring.
"Hence, our view is that surgery is very much the last resort."
