Jayasuriya was persuaded to return to Test cricket |
Former captain Sanath Jayasuriya looks likely to return to the Sri Lanka side after being named in a 12-man squad for the third Test against England. Jayasuriya, who has played 102 Tests and hit 6,613 runs at an average of 41.59, retired from Tests in April.
He was persuaded to join the squad by new chief selector Asantha de Mel but passed over for the second Test defeat.
Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said Jayasuriya had a "very good chance" of playing at Trent Bridge.
"He hasn't played Test cricket for quite some time so it's a tough call for him," said the skipper. "But he's played 100-odd Test matches and that should count for something.
"He's looking forward to the challenge. Plus, he gives us a different variation with his left-arm spinners if it starts turning on the fourth or fifth day."
Jayawardene added that Jayasuriya would bat in the middle order and not in his favoured opening position.
Sri Lanka dropped batsman Thilan Samaraweera, who is averaging less than five for the series, and fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara from the side that lost the second Test by six wickets.
Fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa and middle order batsman Chamara Kapugedera, who missed out at Edgbaston and could do so again here, are added to the 12.
England have yet to confirm their final 11 after adding seamer Jon Lewis to the side that won by six wickets at Edgbaston.
