Giles has five five-wicket hauls and four fifties with the bat in 52 Tests |
Veteran spinner Ashley Giles admitted to mixed feelings when witnessing Monty Panesar's impressive England debut. Giles, forced to miss the tour of India after hip surgery, saw his successor capture three impressive wickets in the drawn first Test in Nagpur.
"Monty is a challenge and a threat to me. It's good to see a young lad do well on his debut because then he's doing well for the team," Giles said.
"But you hope that's your position and now I've got to win that back."
Despite being criticised as a negative bowler, Giles became an integral part of the England team in recent years, having made his debut in 1998.
Much of his success came overseas, with 17 wickets in the three-Test series in pakistan in 2000/1 and 18 in three matches in Sri Lanka in 2003/4.
His most profitable home series was against West Indies in 2004 when he claimed 22 wickets in the four Tests.

Giles played the first two matches of the tour of Pakistan but was troubled by his hip and failed to find his rhythm with the ball.
On his debut against India, Panesar immediately found the turn that often eluded Giles, and claimed the notable scalps of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid with sparkling deliveries.
"Of course part of you wishes it was you getting the wickets, but at the same time he's doing a great job for the team and I hope that continues," Giles said.
"It's been very frustrating because I don't want to miss a game. If I was fit I would want to play in as many games as possible for England. "It's my job and you're also giving someone else an opportunity and that's what's happened here. I'm just not fit and these situations occur.
