Pietersen is deceived by Patel and departs for 67 from 108 balls |
England batsman Kevin Pietersen was frustrated to fall for 67 having looked on course for his third Test century. "I messed up in Nagpur, pulling onto my stumps so I looked to play straighter and give less chances, yet still score runs and be positive," he said.
"I'm disappointed, I have been training really hard and got into a good zone so I wanted to get a really big one."
Looking ahead he said: "We always look to score 400, it's going to be tough and it's a case of grinding it out."
England went to stumps on 163-4, with Andrew Flintoff having just got off the mark with a boundary and Paul Collingwood on 19.
"In the morning it was a bit two-paced, one end was a bit more skiddy but I think we're going OK, hopefully Fred and Colly can put on 150 together," Pietersen continued.
"It's a pretty good wicket, it didn't swing more than it did at Nagpur [in the first Test] and 163-4 doesn't reflect what we should be."

The Hampshire batsman was impressed with debutant Munaf Patel, who took 10 wickets against England in an earlier tour match and dismissed Pietersen with a sharp return catch on Thursday.
"I probably played a bit too early," said the England man.
"He's pretty good with his reverse swing, he bowls around 140-144km but as a batsman I feel sorry for seam bowlers on this wicket!
"It's a case of them having to hit the deck and he has done, he bowled quite well.
India also introduced another even younger debutant, teenage leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who was hit for 20 from his five overs, including a six and four by Pietersen off successive deliveries.
"For a 17-year-old he's pretty good, he didn't bowl too many bad balls and he's probably got a big future," Pietersen said.
"He's got a lot of confidence because first ball after lunch he bowled a googly.
"I don't like to let bowlers, spinners especially, settle. I know I messed up in the middle of the Ashes and wasn't as positive as I should have been.
"But I set that right at The Oval and I've tried to do that in Pakistan and here.
"I don't let the spinner bowl to me, play how I normally play and if it works, it works. So far it's been pretty good!"
