Pakistan talisman Shoaib Akhtar is desperate to play at The Oval

Star paceman Shoaib Akhtar returned to action for Pakistan in their rain-hit weekend against West Indies A.

Shoaib bowled Devon Smith in the first of 11 hostile overs on Saturday as he tested his fitness after injury.

The teams had hoped to play a second one-day game at Shenley on Sunday but rain prevented a ball being bowled.

That will be a setback to the tourists in their quest to give Shoaib some much-needed match practice ahead of the final Test at The Oval on Thursday.

He is working his way back since suffering a stress fracture of his ankle against England in January and a decision will be made after Sunday's limited-overs game against West Indies A.

On Saturday, Lendl Simmons (108no) helped Windies A to 214-4 off 40 overs and Imran Farhat hit 62 not out in Pakistan's 123-3 off 22 before bad light forced an end.

Shoaib cleaned up Devon Smith with the fifth ball of the day but Simmons and Runako Morton got on top of the bowling, with each batsman hooking the "Rawalpindi Express" for six.

Morton was bowled for 44 by left-armer Samiullah Niazi, who then removed Sylvester Joseph with his next ball and took his third wicket when he had Jason Mohammed caught behind.

Dwayne Smith (55 not out) and Simmons then added 115 for the fifth wicket before Richard Kelly removed Mohammed Hafeez Taufeeq Umar cheaply.

Salman Butt hit a breezy 20, and Farhat and Faisal Iqbal looked to have set up a good chance of victory before the elements intervened.
