It was Hoggard's sixth five-wicket haul in his 49th Test |
Matthew Hoggard was delighted to exploit some helpful early morning conditions and claim five wickets as England reduced India to 322-9. "If you don't move the ball laterally here, you're cannon fodder," he said.
Overnight rain aided England and Hoggard added: "Thankfully the ball was reversing and we made good use of it."
He praised debutant Monty Panesar, who took a vital late wicket, saying: "He's shown years of experience and what a fantastic way to finish."
Hoggard continued: "We kept them to under three [runs] an over and got our just desserts. I think I hit the right areas and thankfully I got some rewards."
When Hoggard captured his fifth wicket, that of Irfan Pathan shortly after lunch, India were 203 behind at 190-7 but a stand of 128 between Mohammad Kaif and Anil Kumble defied the tourists for 58 overs.
Hoggard explained some of the difficulties faced by the bowlers in wrapping up the innings in the heat.

"When the ball gets older and the bowlers get tired it becomes easier paced and the batsmen get settled," the 29-year-old Yorkshireman said.
Looking ahead to the fourth day, with India 71 behind at 322-9, he added: "We've still got one more wicket to get to see what lead we've got and that's going to be crucial.
"Hopefully we can get a quick wicket tomorrow, then build a lead and re-assess at the end of the day's play.
"The wicket is slow and low and it's going to get slower and lower with a little bit more turn."
