Collingwood has been in superb form lately |
England have called Durham all-rounder Paul Collingwood into their squad for Thursday's second Ashes Test. Heavy rain in Birmingham in recent days prompted the change after coach Duncan Fletcher and captain Michael Vaughan inspected the Edgbaston pitch.
Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "We decided to add Paul to the squad so we have the maximum number of options available on match day.
"We are covering all the bases until we know how well the wicket will dry."
If conditions make a spinner unnecessary, Collingwood could replace Ashley Giles, who plays his county cricket at Edgbaston.
The Durham man would likely bat at six, with Andrew Flintoff moving down a place.
"That is certainly an option, and that is the reason why Paul is there," Graveney told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Our success in the last 18 months has been built around five bowlers but these are slightly different circumstances."
Collingwood has played in 80 one-day internationals for England but only two Tests, both against Sri Lanka in 2003.
But the 29-year-old is in prime form after hitting centuries - 190, 181 and an unbeaten 105 - in three of his last four County Championship innings.
His medium-paced bowling has been successful in the one-day arena but is unlikely to be used as an attacking option in the Test arena.
Despite Collingwood's call-up, Giles is confident of playing in the second Test.
The Warwickshire spinner told BBC News 24: "It is my home ground, it's a place I feel comfortable and I love playing there.
"It's always good to go into a game with a balanced attack and hopefully I am part of that.
"I have looked at the wicket and it is a little bit soft so I am praying for a bit of sun for the next couple of days.
"It is up to the selectors to pick the best side on a particular wicket and if they think I am not going to play a part on that wicket then fair enough.
"Obviously I want to play every game possible for England."
