Michael Vaughan stressed England's confidence would not be dented ahead of the Ashes despite losing heavily to Australia in the one-day decider.

England go into the Test series on the back of seven-wicket and eight-wicket defeats in the NatWest Challenge.

"Australia deserved the series victory, but we'll pick ourselves up - the five-day game is a totally different concept," said the England captain.

"We have a week to get ready and we're looking forward to the challenge."

England were totally outplayed at The Oval, posting only 228-7 on a good pitch before Australia won with 91 balls to spare with Adam Gilchrist bludgeoning an unbeaten 121 off 101 balls.

"Full credit to Ricky Ponting and his team," Vaughan conceded.

"They played a real good game and the way Gilchrist came out and batted was fantastic.

"We weren't quite at our best in all three disciplines and Australia deserve the trophy."

But Vaughan was quick to praise his team, who tied the triangular series final and beat Australia by nine wickets in the opening fixture of the three-match series.

"Also real credit to the England team, not only in the NatWest Challenge but in the NatWest Series," he said.

"We can be proud of the way we've played one-day cricket over the last few weeks."

The first Ashes Test gets under way at Lord's next Thursday.
