Trescothick said: "It was tough against the spinners. It's something we'll have to look at - trying to adapt to different situations and wickets.

"I thought we could get 210, but they bowled pretty well and we were always on the back foot.

"We'll get ourselves back up and come back strong in the last game."

Trescothick admitted the rearguard action underlined the disappointment of England's higher order batsmen failing to give them a better start.

"All we needed to do was get partnerships together to give ourselves an opportunity," he said.

"Even at the end we were nine down and we were still really close to winning the game.

"That showed that if we'd had one good partnership in the middle, we could have won the game.

"As the score was coming down, I thought we had a good chance and it just needed one good over, but Shoaib Akhtar is one of the best bowlers in the world in any form of cricket.

"But at nine down you don't really deserve to win the game."

Ali echoed his captain's comments about the lack of partnerships proving costly for England.

"If we'd had one more partnership earlier on, the game would have been different.

"When Jimmy Anderson came in, we tried to carry on playing as I had with Ian Blackwell, taking singles, and then hopefully we'd get to the last couple of overs and see how things were.
