Ashley Giles has been labouring on this tour of Pakistan |
England spinner Ashley Giles will have a hip operation next week, but still hopes to be fit for the tour of India. Giles, who was forced to miss the third Test in Pakistan after struggling with the injury in the second game, is set to fly home to England later this week.
He said: "It's cutting it fine for India but by getting it done next week hopefully I'll be on that plane.
"The quicker it happens the quicker I can get fit. I'm looking forward to getting it sorted and getting fit."
He added: "We managed to get through the summer but there has been more pain and it looks like we'll have to get it done.
"I've got to go under the knife, fix the cartilage and remove this bone spur as well. It could be three months recovery so I will have to get it done now.
"It's a bit annoying. I was hoping to have a successful tour of Pakistan. I'm disappointed but looking forward to being on that plane to India."
Giles will be replaced in England's one-day squad by Somerset all-rounder Ian Blackwell.
"Blackwell has had opportunities with the one-day squad before," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.
"Since his appointment as Somerset captain he has had to take on extra responsibility, and we believe he is now better equipped to fulfil his undoubted potential at international level."
Giles's Warwickshire team-mate Alex Loudon has been released from the England Test squad and will travel to Mumbai for 10 days of coaching at the World Cricket Academy.
He will link up with seven members of the ECB Academy squad - Gareth Batty, Ravi Bopara, Jamie Dalrymple, Ed Joyce, Mike Yardy and Luke Wright.
"Alex has made a good impression on his first tour with England and his ability to bowl the 'doosra' makes him an exciting prospect for the future," said England coach Duncan Fletcher.
"This is an excellent opportunity for him to gain more experience of conditions on the sub-continent and continue his development as a cricketer."
