Hoggard made the most of a helpful wicket for seamers

Matthew Hoggard spared England's blushes with an inspired new ball spell on the opening day of their Test warm-up against Pakistan A in Lahore.

The Yorkshireman took 4-39 as the home side struggled to 127-8 at the close in reply to England's paltry of 126.

The tourists could well have been out for 100 but for a stand of 34 between Shaun Udal (23) and Ashley Giles (21).

Andrew Flintoff managed only nine in his first innings of the tour as paceman Mohammad Asif claimed 7-62.

Michael Vaughan's 17 was the only double figure score from the top order as England tumbled to 76-7 at lunch in a repeat of the form they showed when bowled out for 112 in the previous game against a Patron's XI.

They opted for a likely Test XI, with Collingwood and Udal preferred to Ian Bell and James Anderson.

But the top order was blown away after Shahid Nazir made the initial breakthrough by having Andrew Strauss caught at third slip for five.

Vaughan was dropped on nought by Taufeeq Umar before Marcus Trescothick was bowled for eight by an inswinging delivery from Asif which knocked out middle and off stumps.

It quickly became a procession as Kevin Pietersen attempted a flamboyant drive without taking time to adjust to conditions, departing for four, and Vaughan followed in similar fashion for 17.

Collingwood and Jones only lasted four balls each - Collingwood caught behind as he tried to cut and Jones bowled by Asif, who picked up his fifth wicket when Flintoff's checked drive was taken by Arshad Khan at mid-on.

It could have been even worse as Giles swung the bat at a ball from Mohammad Khalil, but keeper Amin-ur-Rehman was unable to hang on to a low chance to his right.

He and Udal stayed together for 52 minutes either side of lunch before Khalil produced a good ball to hit Giles' off stump.

Taufeeq then took a juggling catch after Udal tried unsuccessfully to force the ball away off the back foot and Asif, who played a Test in Australia in January, wrapped things up with the wicket of Steve Harmison for a bright and breezy 18 off 14 balls.

Hoggard was left unbeaten on 11, but bowling then became his main order of business as England sought to retrieve an embarrassing position.

He took a return catch to remove Taufeeq for six and then had Faisal caught behind by Jones for a second ball duck.

Shahid Yousuf was next to go, bowled for 10, and opener Imran Farhat's aggressive start was cut short on 23 when Hoggard won an lbw decision.

Steve Harmison was expensive at the other end, conceding 26 from five overs, but the introduction of Durham team-mate Collingwood paid off when he bowled Mansoor Amjad for seven wth the final ball before tea.

Home skipper Hasan Raza (34) and Rehman (32) put on 60 in the final session but three wickets in four overs from Giles enabled England to end the day in happier mood than they began it.

Flintoff was given five overs by Vaughan before the close, and he was typically tidy in conceding only 12 runs.
