Australia bridged the turn of the century enjoying a sustained spell of success which they maintained on their first tour north in the 20th century. The visitors won one of the most entertaining Ashes series with a narrow victory in the fourth Test, despite making just 86 second innings runs.
That looked to spell defeat with England requiring a mere 124 to win.
But Hugh Trumble had other ideas taking 6-53 as the hosts collapsed within sight of victory, losing by three runs.
Victor Trumper gave Australia the perfect start, sharing a 135-run opening stand with Reg Duff.
While Trumper reached three figures before lunch, ending with 104, and three other batsmen made fifties, nobody else scored more than five.
It was a similar situation during England's innings in which only three men reached double figures. Of those Len Braund made 65 and Francis Jackson 128 in mounting a recovery from 44-5.
The run of failures was a feature of the match, particularly during Australia's second innings when a fourth-wicket stand of 54 between Joe Darling and Syd Gregory saved their side from humiliation.
Although Darling was given a helping hand from Fred Tate who put him down while the batsman was 16. He went on to make 37.
England made a confident start in chasing victory before losing their way.
Trumble had taken just one wicket with England sitting pretty at 92-3, needing only 32 more runs.
But a sensational spell by the off-spinner put the skids under England, who lost seven wickets for just 28 runs.
A 45-minute rain delay interrupted the last wicket stand to add to the tension and on the resumption Tate found the boundary.
But in attemtping to repeat the shot to win the match he was bowled by John Saunders who finished with figures of 4-52.
Did you know?
Trumble took Test best figures of 12-89 in the following game at The Oval where England exacted revenge with a one-wicket win. It is the only time successive Tests have reached a climax where either side can win off one delivery.
