Vaughan hails England revival

Captain Michael Vaughan said England were back in business in the NatWest Series after beating West Indies by seven wickets at Headingley.

England re-emerged as candidates to make the final after two heavy defeats.

"It was a good performance under pressure, which has got our tournament back on track," Vaughan said.

After bowling the visitors out for just 159, England won with 28 overs to spare as Marcus Trescothick top-scored with 55 off 48 balls.

England have never won batting first under Vaughan, and his attack answered their captain's call after he had inserted the visitors.

"It was a decent toss to win. The stats suggest chasing teams are winning more games," Vaughan said.

"We knew we had to win and win convincingly to get some confidence back.

"We saw it home well but our fielding and bowling was excellent."

Vaughan paid tribute to Steve Harmison, who returned 3-31 and helped reduce the Windies to 72-6 early on.

"He is bowling pretty consistent most games, I am not sure what the speed gun is like but they do seem to be coming out with that little bit extra pace," Vaughan commented.

"Whether they have souped it up a little bit I am not too sure.

"But one thing's for sure: I wouldn't want to be 22 yards away from Steve Harmison at the minute."

England took a gamble in recalling Andrew Flintoff and Rob Key, neither of whom bowled, at the expense of Ashley Giles and Ian Blackwell.

"If Freddie is fit he has to come back in the side," Vaughan said.

"Having him back is a huge bonus but we won't see the real Freddie until we get him back as a bowler.

"Without him bowling we need to play either an extra batter or extra bowler. We went with an extra batter here and fortunately it paid off."

Windies skipper Brian Lara agreed that the toss was vital.

"If the team batting first in this series doesn't bat well it is a mismatch," he said.

"The team batting second attack from the start and the match can be over pretty quickly.

"It was a good batting track and we played a couple of bad shots.

"Maybe we needed a bit more discipline."
