Glamorgan's Mike Powell has worked hard at his one-day batting |
Glamorgan's Mike Powell was delighted after being called into the England squad for their opening NatWest Series game against New Zealand. Should Marcus Trescothick's twisted ankle not improve, then Powell will take his place in the batting line-up at Old Trafford on 24 June.
"The chairman of selectors, David Graveney, hasn't promised me anything," Powell said
"I'm up as cover but I could be here two nights or it could be two weeks."
Surrey all-rounder Rikki Clarke has also been added to the squad as cover for England's other injury worry, Andrew Flintoff, for the series that also includes West Indies.
Powell had already been in the England selectors' minds, but gave them another nudge by scoring 49 for Wales against England in last Saturday's one-day challenge match at Cardiff.
"I've worked on a few different shots to help me in my game against different types of bowlers," Powell added.
"That's helped me to be more comfortable at the crease and I've now got different game plans for different situations."
