Tour match, Grace Road, day three (stumps): Leicestershire 210 & 68-2 v New Zealand 413 & 357-5 dec Fleming followed his first innings 56 with 95 in the second |
New Zealand closed on their first victory on their England tour after their batsmen dominated Leicestershire.
Captain Stephen Fleming followed his first innings half-century with a rapid 95, while Chris Cairns (62) and Daniel Vettori (77) also made quick runs.
The Black Caps declared on 357-5, setting the Foxes 561 to win.
Opening bowlers Chris Martin and Kyle Mills then took a wicket each to reduce their hosts to 68-2 with opener John Maunders 31 not out.
New Zealand suffered some bad news, though, when Craig McMillan was forced to retire hurt on 68 after being struck on the hand by Darren Maddy. There was further disappointment for Michael Papps (20) and Scott Styris (13) who both fell to Charlie Dagnall rather than rediscovering lost form.
But McMillan and Fleming shared a partnership of 129 in 27 overs during the afternoon.
With the final two Tests being played back-to-back, this is the Black Caps' final four-day match of the tour.
