Vaughan is confident of returning in the second Test |
England captain Michael Vaughan is confident he will be fit for the second Test against New Zealand after missing the first through injury. Vaughan twisted his right knee in the nets on Monday and his place as skipper was taken by Marcus Trescothick.
"The scans have shown no real damage," said Vaughan.
"It's terribly disappointing to miss a Test match, but the positives are that it doesn't look like I'm going to be out for too long."
Vaughan suffered the injury while facing net bowler Zac Taylor during parctice at Lord's on Monday.
He had to be carried off on a stretcher, leaving his team-mates understandably concerned because of his previous history of knee trouble.
"What happened was a bit freaky but I have had the knee operated on a couple of times and there are a few tears in the cartilage that I have had dealt with before.
"It was a big precaution to be carried out of the nets in the way I was but it is a knee that needs looking after; what might have looked a bit dramatic was the right thing to do at the time."
Vaughan backed Trescothick to do a good job leading the side at Lord's.
"He is a level-headed guy who will give it his best shot; the team are in the capable hands of an astute man out there in the middle.
"He is one of the many players I have turned to on the field since I have been captain.
"Over the next five days if decisions need to be made out there, he will make them and he has proved that he generally gets the decisions right."
