An impressive display by seam bowlers Simon Jones and Steve Harmison guided England to a strong position over the Vice Chancellor's XI in Jamaica.

Jones, who has not played for 16 months because of a cruciate injury, claimed three wickets as he and Harmison reduced the home side to 119 all out.

England moved into a lead of 33 runs - with Nasser Hussain unbeaten on 76 alongside Paul Collingwood.

Michael Vaughan made 66 but Marcus Trescothick fell to a first ball duck.

The Somerset player was deceived by a yorker from Jermaine Lawson to record his third successive low score of the tour.

England captain Vaughan was in fine form before he was caught by Dwayne Bravo off Ryan Cunningham.

But there are more concerns for England's selectors as Graham Thorpe left the field with a recurrence of his long-standing back problems.

Strauss earns England call

It is hoped that the 34-year-old will still be able to play a part in this match but Middlesex's Andrew Strauss has been called up as cover.

England will, however, be pleased that their bowling attack appears to have been revitalised by Jones and Harmison's developing partnership.

The Glamorgan paceman showed no ill effects from his time on the sidelines as he captured Jason Hayne's wicket in his seventh over.

Harmison enjoyed a good day in the field, with figures of 4-17.

His first wicket on tour arrived inside the opening half hour when Kenyan opener Kennedy Otieno was unsettled by a short ball which he could only lob to Jones.

With James Anderson rested after claiming four wickets against Jamaica in the opening tour match, the new ball was shared between Harmison and Hoggard.

Haynes, the captain, played some aggressive shots including a six over mid-off as Hoggard came under pressure.

Ashley Giles was called upon to bowl 10 overs in the session, which cost an economical 16.

And on his return, he clinched two cheap wickets when Dave Bernard and Tonito Willett were caught in the outfield.

Jones' return to the attack brought similar results as Haynes' impressive knock was ended when he was bowled.

Steve Tikolo, with whom he put on 51, followed soon afterwards when he was trapped lbw by Harmison.

Ryan Nurse and Bennett also fell foul of Harmison's pace in the ensuing overs, before Jones rounded off the Vice Chancellor's collapse.
