Trescothick hit two boundaries before sparring at a Nuwan Zoysa delivery and was caught by Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya at first slip for 13.

Michael Vaughan and Mark Butcher both saw edges fall short of the slips, but survived as England finished day two on 27-1, with a mountain to climb to save the match.

Sri Lanka resumed their innings 314-3 overnight, and England wasted no time in gifting Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda de Silva plenty of easy runs with some wayward bowling.

Andrew Flintoff
Flintoff cringes after dropping his second catch
Andrew Flintoff gave Atapattu a second life on 163 and de Silva on 44 when he dropped two catches at second slip.

Atapattu, who was 133 overnight, soon reached his 150, and it was a surprise when he hooked a Dominic Cork bouncer to Marcus Trescothick at fine leg just before lunch.

His 185 came off 351 balls, containing 24 boundaries, and was the first time the batsman has been dismissed in a Test innings between 120 and 201.

He put on 146 for the third wicket with de Silva, who became the first Sri Lankan to pass 6,000 Test runs in his first Test since facing England in March 2001.

The 36-year-old rolled back the series with a series of stunning strokes and looked well set to reach his 20th century before England struck a double blow just before lunch.

Russel Arnold shared in an 85-run partnership with de Silva, and had just posted his 50 when he carved a Matthew Hoggard delivery to Trescothick at third man.

Dominic Cork accounted for de Silva, 12 runs short of a deserved century, in the next over as he got a ball to brush the batsman's gloves and wicketkeeper Alec Stewart took the catch down the leg side.

Trescothick took his fourth catch when Chaminda Vaas slashed Cork to gully.

But Cork later pulled up injured and was forced to leave the field in obvious discomfort.

Nuwan Zoysa hoisted successive Hoggard bouncers for two huge sixes over midwicket, but Hashan Tillekeratne pondered for 74 balls over his unbeaten 17 before Sri Lanka declared.

Andrew Caddick went wicketless while conceding 135 runs, Hoggard took 2-160 and Flintoff ended with figures of 2-101.
