Hegg blasts England selectors
James Foster and Warren Hegg
Hegg (r) wanted to replace Foster in the England side
Lancashire captain Warren Hegg said he has been "used" by England after being overlooked for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's.

Do you agree with Hegg? Have your say

Hegg was in the frame for a call-up after wicketkeeper James Foster broke his arm during a net session.

I ended up being a glorified drinks waiter
Warren Hegg

The 34-year-old toured India and New Zealand with England in the winter as reserve wicketkeeper, but the selectors opted to recall veteran Alec Stewart for Lord's.

"They didn't even have the decency to ring and tell me. I thought I was in with a shout," Hegg said.

"After all they took me all over the world with them in the winter, even though I ended up being a glorified drinks waiter.

"I worked hard, did everything in a professional manner and showed them respect. But they haven't shown me any.

"I've had a fairly good start to this season, no-one had told me that I would not be considered, so I was bound to believe I had a chance.

Alec Stewart
Hegg respects Stewart's ability
"I left my phone on all night, thinking I would get a call either way, but there was nothing.

"No arguments with them choosing Alec Stewart. He is a world-class player. But I was left dangling.

"Surely, out of courtesy, they should have been in touch to explain the situation. It's extremely disappointing. I feel as though England have used me."

Hegg was speaking at The Oval after Lancashire had been bowled out for a record-equalling low score of 68 in their Norwich Union League match against Surrey.

Now Alec Stewart is back in the equation it changes things slightly
England chairman of selectors David Graveney

Ironically, Stewart, who missed the winter tours to undergo surgery, took five catches in the match and Hegg top-scored for Lancashire with 17.

England's chairman of selectors David Graveney said he will ring Hegg to "smooth things over", but added that he usually only contacts players who have have been dropped from the starting XI.

"I can't ring every player that there has been speculation over because the task would be endless," he told BBC Sport Online.

"But I know Warren well and if we have caused him offence I will ring him to smooth things over.

"We picked him for the tours of India and New Zealand because he is a fantastic team player and he did a great job for us.

"We knew that if things went pear-shaped with James Foster then we could rely on him to take up the gloves.

"But now Alec Stewart is back in the equation it changes things slightly."
