 | |  Saturday, 27 April, 2002, 18:03 GMT 19:03 UK Sri Lanka on song  Jayawardene was Sri Lanka's first centurion of the summer Tour match, Canterbury, day two of three (stumps): Sri Lanka 375 v Kent Sri Lanka recovered from a poor start to reach 375 all out on day two of their first tour match against Kent at Canterbury. Mahela Jayawardene was the star, hitting a sparkling 119 from just 134 balls. He shared in a thrilling partnership of 151 with the veteran Aravinda de Silva, playing against his former Kent teammates, for the fourth wicket which resurrected Sri Lanka after a poor start. Aravinda, who has not appeared in Tests for Sri Lanka since March last year, eventually fell for 63 but that didn't stop the Sri Lanka middle-order making hay. Russel Arnold thrashed 81 from 109 balls, including 16 fours, whilst Thilan Samaraweera also helped himself to a half-century. A late burst from medium-pacer James Golding (4-76) snuffed out the Sri Lanka tail in quick time, but by that point the visitors had already accomplished their mission.
Captain Sanath Jayasuriya had been dismissed by Martin Saggers for a duck in the first over. Fellow opener Marvan Atapattu looked to shrug off that early loss with a breezy 20 from 36 balls but he was undone by Saggers as well Ben Trott then got in on the act after a nervous start removing left-hander Kumar Sangakkara lbw, to leave Sri Lanka rocking on 55 for three. The tourists decided to rest Chaminda Vaas, allowing youngsters Ruchira Perera and Charitha Buddika the chance to fight it out for the third seamer's spot in the Test match which begins on May 16. All-rounder Samaraweera was also named in the eleven, as Sri Lanka took a look at their spin options in the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan.
