Foster waits on contract call
Foster ducks an Andre Adams bouncer in Auckland
Foster has endured an up-and-down winter
Wicket-keeper James Foster hopes he has done enough to earn an England central contract when the names are announced next week.

Coach Duncan Fletcher has already given his recommendations to chairman of selectors David Graveney.

And an announcement is expected to be made from Lord's on Monday about the identity of the 12.

"It would be an absolute bonus to get a contract," Foster told BBC Sport Online on his return from New Zealand.

"But I can't do any more to persuade the selectors.

"I've played all winter, done everything I can and now I've just got to wait."

It has been speculated that the 11 players who took part in the third Test defeat in Auckland will all receive contracts, although Warwickshire batsman Ian Bell could replace Mark Ramprakash.

Fast bowler Darren Gough would be the 12th name on the list.

Learning curve

Foster has endured an up-and-down winter, having made his England debut on the one-day tour of Zimbabwe in October.

He was dropped for three one-day matches in New Zealand in favour of Marcus Trescothick, and was criticised for mistakes in the drawn second Test.

Veteran Alec Stewart may retake his place behind the stumps in the one-day game in the lead-up to the World Cup.

But England are expected to persevere with the 21-year-old Essex glove-man in the Test side, set to play series against Sri Lanka and India this summer.

"I've had some good days and some bad but I've spoken to people and tried to put things right," said Foster.

"There's no point in hiding from problems; it's crucial to learn from your mistakes."

Before leaving New Zealand, Fletcher said he was pleased with the performance of several youngsters who have come into the side.

"The younger guys have developed this winter and with a few more Tests and one-day internationals over the next year they will get better," the coach said.

"They've played well under the extra pressure this winter and they've all progressed very nicely the more they've played."
