![]() | Farewell to England all-rounder ![]() England held their own memorial service in Auckland Former England Test and one-day international cricketer Ben Hollioake was cremated on Thursday, five days after he died in a car accident in Perth. The private ceremony took place in Fremantle and followed Wednesday's memorial service, which was attended by over 250 people. Adam Hollioake, another former England international, delivered an emotional tribute to his brother at the public ceremony, describing Ben as a vibrant person.
The 24-year-old died early on Saturday morning when his Porsche hit a brick wall as he and his girlfriend, who remains in a critical condition, were returning home after a family dinner. Among mourners at the funeral were England Test captain Nasser Hussain and many of Hollioake's former Surrey teammates, including former England captain Alec Stewart. Members of Western Australia's sporting fraternity, including one of Ben's close friends, West Coast Eagles Australian Football League star Ben Cousins, also paid their respects. England farewell While Hollioake's family mourned his passing in Western Australia, England's players and management held a memorial service in New Zealand. The tribute took place at the picturesque Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Gardens at suburban Bastion Point, overlooking Auckland's Waitemata Harbour.
"It was a sombre occasion but very dignified," Walpole said. "The weather was wonderful and the setting was lovely. It was very fitting." Australian-born all-rounder Hollioake, 24, played in two Tests and 20 one-day internationals for England. |
