Matthew Hoggard came of age as a Test cricketer by producing a career best performance to put England in a commanding position at Jade Stadium.

They led by 144 when bad light ended play early after Hoggard had returned figures of seven for 63 despite having two catches dropped off his bowling.

It was exactly the performance skipper Nasser Hussain wanted in the field after his own 106 had enabled England to post a respectable first day total on a pitch offering help to the bowlers.

New Zealand-born Andrew Caddick chipped in with three wickets in one over as the Kiwis trailed by 81 on first innings, with Daniel Vettori (42) and Craig McMillan (40) the only batsmen to counter attack with any degree of success.

England's second innings began badly when Michael Vaughan fell for a duck, but an aggressive 33 by Marcus Trescothick carried their lead into three figures.

No early alarms

Vettori took 10 off one over from Hoggard, including a slash over slips for four and superb cover drive off the next ball, after rain had delayed the start for 75 minutes.

But the Yorkshireman soon had his revenge as, bowling to a disciplined line and length and swinging the ball consistently, he removed Matt Horne for 14.

Graham Thorpe took the catch moving to his left at gully, but was unable to cling on in Hoggard's next over when he dived to his right after Lou Vincent got a thick edge.

Vettori continued to attack anything loose but Hoggard's switch to bowling round the wicket paid off immediately as an injudicious cut shot gave James Foster an easy catch behind the stumps.

Vincent looked all at sea as Hoggard probed away around off stump and he was given another life when Mark Butcher put down a regulation chance at second slip.

Treble strike

Caddick toiled in vain during the morning
But he was beaten all ends up by a perfect yorker from Hoggard after making 12, while a more regulation length accounted for Nathan Astle (10), who was trapped on the back foot.

Hoggard finally took a breather after a 17-over stint, allowing Caddick to have a go at the Port Hills End.

It paid off as Stephen Fleming (12) gave a catch to gully and Chris Cairns followed for nought when a firm-footed push resulted in a slip catch.

Adam Parore was lbw next ball but Chris Drum denied Caddick a hat-trick.

McMillan swung defiantly to make 40 off 48 balls, aided by a missed chance to substitute fielder Craig White at third man, but perished at long-on as he went for another big hit.

Hoggard then wrapped up the innings with another away-swinger which Butler nicked to Nasser Hussain in the slips.

Vaughan was yorked by Butler for nought as England began their reply but Trescothick put a sketchy start behind him by hitting five fours before clattering a short ball from Butler to Vettori at point.

Less than four more overs were possible as the light closed in, with Mark Butcher 22 not out at the close and Hussain on six.
