Bad news for Bond
Shane Bond appeals for a leg-before decision
Bond made a big impression in Australia recently
New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond will not play any part in the one-day or Test series against England.

X-rays have confirmed that he has a stress fracture of his left foot and he will be out of action for six to eight weeks.

"We feared the worst yesterday, but decided to let technology confirm it before putting a definite time frame on Bond's unavailability.

"It's a real shame because he's done so well," said New Zealand coach Dennis Aberhart.

Bond suffered the injury during the one-day VB Series in Australia where he was the leading wicket-taker with 21 victims at an average of 16.38.

He has made four Test appearances but has yet to play for New Zealand on home soil.

Ian Butler bowling in the nets
Butler's raw potential impressed the selectors

Rookie paceman Ian Butler has been called into the Black Caps one-day squad after only seven senior appearances for Northern Districts, and now has a chance to stake a claim for a Test place as well.

He is quicker than more experienced rivals like Chris Drum, Chris Martin and James Franklin.

"The only plus from his (Bond's) injury) is that it gives someone else an opportunity to step up.

"Ian Butler has some big shoes to fill, but we're confident he can deliver," Aberhart added.
