![]() | An unforgettable tour ![]() Barmy Army member Phil Long reflects on his epic tour of India to support the England cricket side. Phew! Made it. Twenty-three scheduled days of cricket in just 36 days would test anyone travelling in England let alone here in the Indian subcontinent, but somehow I've made it through in one piece. Eight train journeys (the longest the 38-hour trek from Ahmedabad to Bangalore), one overnight state bus journey (just 16 hours), numerous local bus journeys and countless auto-rickshaw rides have ensured each cricket ground has been arrived at in time for a mango juice before the start of play.
A quick calculation in the invaluable Indian train timetable shows that the train journeys alone have covered a staggering 6468 kilometres. At an average speed of around 50kph my one regret of the tour is that I did not bring a cushion to sit on! If you were watching the final Test in England you may have wondered what an earth you were seeing. Why were five grown men parading a Wendy house in the cheap seats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium? The answer is quite simple - in order to inspire England's Freddie Flintoff it was decided that a Flintstones' Wendy house spotted in a Bangalore toy shop might do the trick. Freddie Flintoff/Freddie Flintsone - you get the picture. Now, you may scoff at the utter stupidity of this (I know I did) and when Flintoff was out for just four in England's first innings it looked like Bangalore might never see the Flintstones' Wendy house again.
Enter Freddie Flintoff the bowler and suddenly the Wendy house was being rapidly reconstructed much to the bemusement of the Indian crowd as Freddie captured one, two and then three wickets before close of play on the second day. One of the highlights of the tour was seeing an England player, each time he took a wicket, doffing his cap to a Wendy house occupied by five men in the middle of an Indian cricket crowd. Superb! One thing that people watching on TV could not fail to recognise was the British type weather that descended on Bangalore during the third Test. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a cricket ground after a downpour waiting for the covers to be removed. What made it doubly frustrating in Bangalore was that my Hinglish was unable to penetrate the almost inaudible announcements in the main pavilion and so no-one had a clue what was going on until the covers were actually removed. Of course, if you headed to the nearest bar and watched the TV for the latest announcements...
The bad weather also gave the newspapers and amateur weather-forecasters a field day. Depending on which paper you read or which England fan you spoke to it was the worst weather in Bangalore for the last four, 40 or 400 years! So that is it. Another England tour overseas done and dusted. Most of England's travelling army of fans have either followed the team's example and flown home for Christmas or migrated to the beaches of Goa to relive the tour ball-by-ball. For some the one-day internationals next month are on the agenda, while the England women's tour of India starting on 6 January seems to have found favour with one or two. I hope you have enjoyed these postcards from the cheap seats in India and they have shown this England tour from the other side of the security cordon wrapped around the players for the last five and a half weeks. The result was not what we wanted but, as ever, the tour has been quite simply unforgettable. |
