![]() | Giles puts England in charge ![]() England celebrate the end of Tendulkar Second Test, Ahmedabad, Day Three (stumps): England (15-0 and 407) lead India (291 all out) by 131 runs. Ashley Giles claimed his best-ever Test figures of five for 67 as England dismissed India for 291, despite a superb Sachin Tendulkar century. England then had three overs of batting to negotiate before the umpires drew stumps and the tourists now have a real chance of claiming the unlikeliest of wins. VVS Laxman was last man out for India, caught for 75 in the deep off Giles as he was forced to hit out. Laxman had watched from the other end as Tendulkar was out for 103, Virender Sehwag for 20, Anil Kumble for five and Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath for ducks. England got the crucial scalp of Tendulkar moments after he had hit his 27th Test ton.
India's national hero had gone to his century with a majestic pull to deep square leg for four off Craig White after cutting loose in the post-lunch session. But his wicket sparked a collapse and England have wrested back the initiative. Matthew Hoggard removed the great man - as he was caught on the drive by Nasser Hussain at mid-on for 103. Hussain juggled the ball before joyfully hurling it skywards. Tendulkar's innings had been a memorable one, even by his extraordinary standards, as he had to haul India out of a hole when they were 93 for four. He put on 118 with Laxman for the fifth wicket, without which India would have really struggled. Boost It was a massive surprise when Tendulkar was out just before tea.
And England had a further boost just after the interval as Craig White won a questionable lbw decision against Sehwag. Giles, England's best bowler, then got in on the act, clean bowling Kumble with a fullish ball that turned sharply. And as England turned the screw, Harbhajan gifted Giles his third wicket by giving Flintoff an easy catch at cover. Srinath was caught at bat-pad, pushing forward. Tendulkar's fine form came after England had enjoyed another good session in the morning, picking up two wickets and forcing India to score extremely slowly.
Hoggard's wicket, the first of the day, came when he induced an edge from Dravid, the right-hander fencing at a perfectly-pitched ball just outside off stump. It ended Dravid's tortuous 93-minute stay at the crease. The home side lead the three-match series 1-0 after a facile win in Mohali.
