Kallis played himself nicely into form ahead of the Oval Test

Jacques Kallis continued his fine tour of England with an unbeaten century against Derbyshire on Friday.

Kallis, together with Mark Boucher (89) got the tourists out of difficulty when they had been 111-4.

Together the pair put on 161 late in the day to take the initiative away from the county side, who were not at full strength.

Australian-born seamer Paul Havell, in his debut appearance for Derbyshire, finished with respectable figures of 4-77, however.

He picked up the wickets of Graeme Smith, Neil McKenzie, Boeta Dippenaar and, eventually Boucher.

Three of his wickets came courtesy of successful shouts for lbw.

Wash-out

Only 19 overs were possible before lunch following the wash-out of the entire opening day's play on Thursday.

Smith chose to bat after winning the toss but was soon back in the pavilion for nine as 23-year-old Havell struck for the first time.

Jacques Rudolph was given an opportunity at the top of the order following moderate form in the Test series, but he never found any fluency before falling to Neil Gunter for 17.

McKenzie helped Kallis add 56 before edging a catch to Luke Sutton after making 22, and Dippenaar followed shortly afterwards for four.

Shaun Pollock, meanwhile, is still in South Africa with his wife and new baby daughter and will not rejoin the rest of the squad until next Monday.
