The expressions of the two captains spoke volumes following the game |
Captain Michael Vaughan has called on England to rebound from their 191-run fourth Test defeat to tie the series in the final match against South Africa. The home side saw just 49 minutes of action on the final day at Headingley as the tourists, set up by a first innings century from Gary Kirsten, took a 2-1 series lead.
"Over the five days South Africa were more disciplined and played smarter cricket," said Vaughan. "To have them 140-7 and then allow that score was disappointing.
"Gary Kirsten was outstanding in both innings and probably the difference between the two sides."
England's collapse brought back memories of their innings second Test defeat at Lord's, but they rebounded to win the next match and Vaughan believes they can do so again.
"We showed at Trent Bridge the character in the side and we have to show character again," he said.

"We have to regroup and get back to simple cricket. We have to get a result at The Oval and get the series back to 2-2."
Opposite number Graeme Smith hailed a "fantastic team performance, from Gary Kirsten's knock to Jacques Kallis's bowling and Andrew Hall's 99.
Kallis's 6-54 capped a match which had seen the tourists in trouble on day one after winning the toss.
"At 21-4, you think things could have gone better," said Smith. "But the way the wicket played showed it was the right decision."
The Headingley victory was in marked contrast to South Africa's controversial fifth Test defeat in 1998, at the same Yorkshire ground, which lost them the series.
