Tour match, Canterbury, day two of three (stumps): South Africa 325-4 dec & 146-4; Kent 235South Africa's warm-up match before the Trent Bridge Test looks certain to produce a result given further fine weather and the tourists look most likely to win it.
Alex Loudon and Geraint Jones hit half-centuries for Kent but the innings collapsed badly from 194-4, with the last six wickets tumbling for just 39 runs.
Loudon was patient but hit 11 boundaries in all |
The two spinners Robin Peterson and Paul Adams shared five of those wickets, with the other the result of a run-out.
Loudon took three hours over his 63 while Jones needed just 83 balls to hit exactly 50, but they were badly let down by the other batsmen, save RObert Key (47).
With a 90-run first-innings lead, South Africa lost both Herschelkle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis cheaply as Martin Saggers bowled both batsmen for single figures.
But half-centuries from Jacques Rudolph and Boeta Dippenaar repaired that minor damage, with Dippenaar (53) still at the crease and ready to continue on Saturday.
South Africa are resting Graeme Smith, Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini and Dewald Pretorius for this match while Andrew Hall plays for Worcestershire in the C&G semi-final against Lancashire on Saturday.
The third Test starts at Headingley on 15 August with South Africa 1-0 up in the series.
While England will reveal their squad on Saturday after much head-scratching, South Africa's only headache is to find out who to drop from the team who won the second Test at Lord's now that Kallis is once again available.
