England get Trescothick lift
Marcus Trescothick
Trescothick broke a thumb last year

England opener Marcus Trescothick says a broken finger is unlikely to stop him batting against South Africa in the first Test.

"Hopefully I'll bat," he said on Friday. "I have been in the nets all morning and it's pretty sore."

The Somerset left-hander fractured a bone in his right index finger attempting to stop a low edge from Herschelle Gibbs on Thursday.

"It was a very innocuous ball, but that is the way it happens sometimes," said Trescothick.

"It just hit me wrong and it chipped the top of the knuckle."

Trescothick, who missed three Tests against India last summer after breaking a thumb, left the field for X-rays and did not return as South Africa went on to reach 398-1 at the close of play.
