Tour match, Wormsley: South Africa 276-6 (50 overs) beat Getty XI (50 overs) 226-9 by 50 runs Herschelle Gibbs helped give South Africa a positive start |
Jacques Kallis spent valuable time in the middle to score 81 as South Africa continued their build-up towards the triangular series against England and Zimbabwe. All-rounder Kallis, who was allowed to join the squad late because of a family illness, hit 81 off 95 balls against an attack which included former Zimbabwe fast bowler Henry Olonga.
It was the first game played at the Wormsley estate since the death of Sir Paul Getty two months ago.
Several high-profile guests were present to watch the game including film director Lord Attenborough, South African High Commissioner to London Lindiwe Mabuza, former athlete Sir Roger Bannister and retired umpire Dickie Bird.
Kallis was well supported by skipper Graeme Smith (67) and Herschelle Gibbs (52), while Nottinghamshire team-mates Kevin Pietersen and Paul Franks, who each took two wickets, were the pick of the Getty attack.
Despite losing Darren Maddy for a duck, the Getty side made a good start in reply.
Australia A batsman Chris Rogers made 67 and Martin van Jaarsveld, loaned out for the day by South Africa, contributed 40 before both were removed by spinner Nicky Boje, who took 3-36.
But they lost their way after reaching 110-1 and despite an aggressive 50 by Pietersen, they finished well short of their target.
