The selectors overlooked previous form by naming Dippenaar in the Test squad for the tour to England, but overlooking him for the one-day series. He was subsequently asked to double up when team-mate Neil McKenzie decided not to risk playing in the shorter form of the game following a back problem.
Dippenaar's one-day record for South Africa is very good as he averages over 40, even though he has yet to register his first three figure score.
In Test cricket, his average is only 28 despite an innings of 177 not out against Bangladesh at Chittagong in April.
After starting his Test career as an opener, he is now settled in the middle order but has yet to prove he can score heavily against top quality bowling.
