![]() | Fisher has Hampshire in spin ![]() Ian Fisher sealed victory for Yorkshire in dramatic style Day 4: Hampshire (4 points) 213 & 185 lost to Yorkshire (16 points) 205 & 265 Click here for scorecard Ian Fisher took a wicket with the final ball of first-class cricket at Northlands Road to help Yorkshire defeat Hampshire in thrilling style. Hampshire's Yorkshireman in exile Alex Morris was just one ball away from salvaging a draw for his side in their last game before they move to a new stadium at West End. With a number of close fielders looking on, he edged the left-arm spinner's last delivery - and Gavin Hamilton swooped to hold the vital slip catch. A Yorkshire victory had seemed unlikely shortly after tea when Hampshire, set 258 to win at 4.77 an over, had reached 113 for one. Strong support But James Middlebrook and Fisher spun their way through the Hampshire innings, with strong support from the occasional left-arm slow of Australian Darren Lehmann. Off-spinner Middlebrook's four for 88 gave him match figures 10 for 170. Fisher took three of the last four wickets, and Lehmann's clever variation accounted for two more. Hampshire's batsmen again failed to do justice to their reputations once the opening pair of Giles White (37) and Derek Kenway - run out for 58 - had departed.
Earlier in the day Lehmann had pressed on with the bat to 92, and Hamilton hit a belligerent 61 to share a match-winning partnership of 99 for the seventh wicket with the Australian. Lehmann was particularly severe on his compatriot Shane Warne as he moved impressively to post a season's aggregate 1477 first-class runs. The Yorkshire pair dealt easily with the dry pitch giving the visiting pitch panel, charged with deciding if Hampshire had served up a sub-standard surface, much to ponder over. Warne's seven wickets in the match hoisted his total to 70 for the season at 23.14 - an excellent return for his summer's work in a struggling side. Veteran Peter Hartley, who was playing his final first-class game was given a guard of honour by his old county Yorkshire when he came to the wicket for the last time, but his efforts could not save Hampshire. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top County Ch 1 stories: Links to top County Ch 1 stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
