Younis could yet lead Yorkshire
Younis Khan

Pakistan's Younis Khan is back in the frame to be Yorkshire captain, though the club, enduring a tough post-season, says all options remain open.

The second overseas signing could also be a batsman, it has emerged.

Batting reserves are at breaking point following the departures of Darren Lehmann and Michael Lumb, while Anthony McGrath is also set to leave.

Chief executive Stewart Regan told BBC Sport: "Our goal is to make sure we enter into a period of stability."

The captaincy issue has been a mess since the resignation of Craig White at the end of the summer.

In early October, Younis Khan said he had been offered the job but the county, while confirming it had signed him, claimed he had been mistaken.

Then Sussex hero Chris Adams agreed to captain the side - and be director of cricket - but reneged on the deal and went back to Hove.

Next, McGrath was offered the job but declined that and then announced that he wanted to leave the club altogether.

We don't want to knee-jerk into something we might regret

He is set to enter a potentially bloody legal battle with the club, where he remains a contracted player.

Regan said there was no fixed avenue for the club to explore now.

He said: "We have had lots of conversations regarding the captaincy position.

"One of the options is that we could sign a captain, one of the options is we could bring in an overseas player as captain and another is that we could offer the captaincy to someone inside the club.

"We are very keen that the captaincy issue is sorted out, but we want to make sure we get it right.

"We don't want to knee-jerk into something we might regret."

Yorkshire also needs to appoint a new director of cricket. David Byas, who had held the position, has been pondering a different role - head of cricket development - since late October.
