Worcestershire have signed Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal as their overseas player for the second half of the 2011 season.

The 33-year-old is due to arrive at New Road in time to play in the Friends Provident t20.

"He has good variation and gives us options," director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

Australian all-rounder Damien Wright will play for Worcestershire in the first part of the season.

Ajmal has taken 33 wickets in Test matches and was part of the Pakistan side that won the World Twenty20 in England in 2009.

His move to Worcestershire, who were promoted to County Championship Division One on the final day of last season, is subject to the approval of the Pakistan Cricket Board and a work permit being obtained.

Rhodes added: "Saeed has received offers from various other clubs but after consultation with his manager and assessing numerous factors he has made the decision to join Worcestershire.

"We're absolutely delighted to welcome him to the club. He's a bowler of international stature and as a spinner with good variation he will be a crucial weapon during the latter part of the season."

Ajmal, who on Tuesday was named in the Pakistan squad for the World Cup, added: "I am confident that with the help of Steve Rhodes and the boys at the club, I will settle in and give my all for the club in search of honours in 2011."
