Solanki hit his first Twenty20 hundred against Glamorgan |
Worcestershire captain Vikram Solanki has urged the New Road supporters to back his side as they face Warwickshire in the Twenty20 Cup on Friday night. Following Thursday's wash out between Northamptonshire and Somerset, the winners could go top of the group. Solanki told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "There's no need for any sort of extra spice. It will be great to see a full New Road. "Hopefully the wicket will be as good as the one we had against Glamorgan." Worcestershire are third in the table with ten points, but victory would take them to their last game at Northampton on Sunday with their fate in their own hands. The Royals beat Glamorgan by 101 runs on Wednesday with Solanki scoring a ton off just 48 balls - which now takes him ahead of James Allenby's 54-ball effort as the fastest century of the season. "Vikram's knock against Glamorgan was special," said coach Steve Rhodes. "I saw Ben Smith hit a 42-ball hundred a few years ago and never thought I'd see anything like that again, but Vikram's innings was just as good." It also puts Solanki in line to win the annual Walter Lawrence Trophy, which has been extended to include all one-day as well as first-class cricket for the season's fastest century. Previous winners of the award, which has been contested consecutively since 1966 include Gary Sobers, Viv Richards (twice), Ian Botham (twice) , Graeme Hick and Andrew Flintoff. Meanwhile, Rhodes will stick with the same squad that hammered Glamorgan, to secure Worcestershire's fifth victory in the competition. Rhodes said: "I will be picking from the same 12 who were in the squad that beat Glamorgan, with Ian Fisher in the shake-up too." There will be full commentary on the game on BBC Hereford and Worcester on 738am, and bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester
