Worcestershire's Graeme Hick will break the record for the number of games played in senior cricket when Somerset Sabres visit New Road on Thursday.

Hick, who will play his 1,196th match, told BBC Hereford & Worcester reaching the milestone does not concern him.

"It's not really that meaningful to me, apart from the fact that I have had a long ride and a very enjoyable one.

"If nobody had mentioned it, I wouldn't have even realised as it's not the sort of milestone you go out to set."

The 42-year-old added: "I would rather just get it out of the way so that people stop asking the question."

The former England star equalled Graham Gooch's record when he played in Tuesday's seven-wicket defeat by Warwickshire Bears in the Twenty20 Cup.

"I've been very lucky as Worcester was a place I didn't come to out of choice.

"I was posted here on a scholarship and I have been Worcester through and through for the past 24 years.

"My wife's from Worcester and we have a lovely family here, so I count myself really lucky."

Over the years Hick has played countless key innings for the New Road side, as well as being reliable in the slips.

And Hick said he especially has fond memories of the 1988 season.

"But there have been some important knocks along the way that have been quite influential in the results of games and they are always the ones that you enjoy the most."

That achievement against the West Indies is put into sharper focus given the tourists' attack that day.

Malcolm Marshall might have been missing but they still fielded Patrick Patterson, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Ian Bishop.

Worcestershire's director of cricket Steve Rhodes said he had the greatest admiration for Hick's longevity but he was certain he would be happier if the occasion passed by unnoticed.

"He plays to win games of cricket and I think the anoraks out there tend to enjoy the records more than he does."

This is just one of a number of records Hick could break in the coming months and seasons.

He requires 1,386 more runs in all competitions to take him to 65,000 career runs and second place in the all-time list.

In the field he needs a further 13 catches to reach 1,000 in senior cricket.
