COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO New Road, day two of four (close): Worcestershire 275-7 v Leicestershire
New Road fell victim to the elements yet again as only eight overs were possible on the second day. An early morning downpour prevented any play before lunch and the players finally got into the middle for a half-hour session from 1345 BST. A series of heavy showers delayed a re-start until a mini-hailstorm forced umpires Vanburn Holder and Trevor Jesty to abandon the day shortly after 1600. Steven Davies and Gareth Andrew added 17 to take Worcs to 275-7. Meanwhile, Worcestershire's injury-prone paceman Simon Jones is expected to be fit for Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy match with Somerset after having a cortisone injection in his neck. "It it had an immediate positive impact," Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton said. "Obviously this setback has been frustrating for him after he worked so hard during the winter months to prove his fitness and he had been looking very sharp. "He is very hungry to do well with Worcestershire and we are hoping that this neck setback is just a minor blip."
