Rankin hoping for Bears T20 role

Warwickshire paceman Boyd Rankin has his sights set on a place in their Twenty20 plans after returning from ICC World Twenty20 duty with Ireland.

The Bears will resume their group matches against Gloucestershire in Bristol on Monday.

"Before I went to the World Cup I wasn't really getting a look in," the 24-year-old told BBC WM.

"From what the guys have seen during the last week with Ireland I might have a chance of playing."

The big fast bowler was one of the successes of Ireland's Twenty20 campaign that saw them sorely test Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the second group phase.

And he feels he has learned enough to be a real factor in what remains of the Bears' fixtures in the shortest form of the game, particularly during the power-plays.

"There's always a case for the likes of myself to open the bowling, someone who hits the deck, because it seems to be harder for batsmen to get away in those first six overs," he said.

"That's all I was trying to do during the World Cup, to try and hit the deck and try to put them under pressure, bowl a tight line. It seemed to work."

Neil Carter, Chris Woakes, Keith Barker and Stef Piolet have been the seam bowlers preferred by Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles in the competition so far this season.

And as well as the returning Rankin, Giles may be able to call upon all-rounder Rikki Clarke for the trip to Bristol following his recovery from a broken hand.
