Sussex secure Mushtaq on new deal
Mushtaq Ahmed
Mushtaq has been a prolific wicket-taker for the champions
Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has signed a new two-year deal with Sussex.

Mushtaq took 104 wickets in his first season at Hove in 2003 as Sussex claimed their maiden Championship title and helped them win it again in 2006.

Warwickshire were interested in signing the 37-year-old, whose current contract runs out at the end of this season.

"I, along with the rest of the staff, are delighted the best bowler to ever have pulled on a Sussex shirt is staying," said captain Chris Adams.

Mushtaq, who has taken five-wicket hauls on five occasions in the Championship this season, with a best of 7-72, said: "Sussex is a family club and it is an honour for me to be playing here. Signing a two-year contract is great news and I feel blessed and very pleased."

Cricket Manager Mark Robinson had no doubts that the wily spinner would continue to play an influential role for the club in the future.

"It was always going to be the case; it was just a question of whether he still had the desire and passion for the game.

"He clearly still has a lot left in him so actually completing the deal with us was just a formality," Robinson explained. "Once again he has won games for Sussex and I am sure this will continue to be the case.
