Kirtley's action also came under scrutiny in 2001 |
Sussex seam bowler James Kirtley has been cleared to resume his career after remodelling his bowling action. Kirtley was suspended last October after twice being reported during the 2005 county season.
He has spent the winter working with Sussex manager Mark Robinson and his action was recently re-tested.
England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman Chris Kelly said the "level of elbow extension" in Kirtley's action had now "reduced considerably".
He added: "James is now free to bowl in county and international cricket."
The rules state that the bowling arm must not flex by more than 15 degrees and Kirtley's action now falls below that limit.
"I am delighted that the last five months of hard work has paid off - it has been an intense and emotional journey.
"I have received fantastic support from the club and supporters, and I am particularly grateful to Mark Robinson and the Sussex coaching team for their tireless efforts," the 31-year-old commented.
"I am now looking forward to taking an active role in the season, but understand the need to continue monitoring developments."
Kirtley, who has been granted a benefit by Sussex this year, has taken 576 first-class wickets at an average of 26 during his career.
He won four Test caps for England in 2003 and has also played 11 limited overs internationals.
Robinson said Kirtley had shown "magnificent strength" during the period of uncertainty over his future.
"We will continue to support James throughout this summer to ensure his action remains consistent," he added.
