Surrey back Champions League idea

Surrey

Surrey chief executive Paul Sheldon has described a Twenty20 Champions League as a very exciting prospect.

Two teams from England, India, South Africa and Australia would play for a prize fund of 2.5m in October 2008 were the plan to go ahead.

Sheldon told BBC London 94.9: "2.5m is absolutely enormous. We're being dragged into the real world of competitive sports.

"Cricket traditionally hasn't played for that much money."

"The county champions win 100,000. When you spread that around a club and the players it's not very much, particularly when you look at other sports," Sheldon added.

"The format is interesting. In terms of just using four countries rather than more, I'm not sure about that."

The two finalists of this year's Twenty20 in the four countries would proceed to the final to play for the winner's prize of 1m.

"We've wanted to win this every time it's happened (the English Twenty20) and we'll want to win it even more, 2.5m is a huge amount of money," said Sheldon.

"That sort of landscape has not been there in the past. Cricket is on this very fast moving conveyor belt at the moment.

"There are a lot of things that still need clarification but I'd like to say Surrey are full square behind these changes, trying to maximise the commercial opportunities of Twenty20 while not completely changing the format of cricket, particularly in four day cricket."
