Bicknell has played for Surrey for 21 seasons |
Former Surrey and England bowler Martin Bicknell has retired from first-class cricket with immediate effect. The 37-year-old had planned to hang up his boots at the end of the season but niggling injuries have forced him to retire early.
He played for Surrey for 21 seasons and has taken 1,026 wickets at 24.64.
He said: "It has been a huge honour to represent the County for this long and the memories I have and the friends I have made are priceless."
The news comes less than a week after his older brother Darren announced he would be retiring at the end of the season.
Surrey cricket manager Alan Butcher described Bicknell as one of the "true Surrey greats".
He added: "Over 1,000 wickets in a 20-year career marks him out as a great bowler, but his contributions with the bat over the last seven or eight years have elevated him to the position of a genuine all-rounder.
"He was integral to Surrey's success during the glory years between 1997-2003 and is one of those cricketers who are truly irreplaceable."
Bicknell played four Test matches for England between 1993 and 2003 and took 14 wickets.
He has played 292 first-class matches, 279 of them for Surrey.
Bicknell will take up the post of master in charge of cricket at Charterhouse School in Surrey.
