Batty is likely to play a full season with Alec Stewart now retired |
Adam Hollioake has stood down as Surrey captain by mutual consent at the club where he will play his final season of professional cricket in 2004. Wicket-keeper Jonathan Batty will take over the captaincy.
Paul Sheldon, Surrey chief executive, said: "Both Adam and the club decided it was in the best interest of the team for the captaincy to be handed over.
"The club is fortunate to have a man of Jonathan's calibre and integrity to take on this demanding job."
Batty, 29, made his Surrey debut in 1997 and was awarded his county cap in 2001.
Last season he scored three centuries and his first class batting average was 56.94.
Charity trek
Hollioake is currently involved in a charity trek from Edinburgh to Morocco.
Next season, as well as being his last in Surrey colours, will see him awarded a benefit.
He will then concentrate on business interests in Perth and raise money for the Ben Hollioake Fund, set up in memory of his brother who died in a car accident in 2002.
Hollioake, 32, has scored 8,964 runs at an average of 40.01 and has taken 343 wickets in 162 first class games.
Batty, an Oxford Blue in 1996, played Minor Counties cricket for Oxfordshire in 1996, and opens the batting in the County Championship.
