Jack Birkenshaw has ended his long-standing association with Leicestershire by mutual consent.

The 62-year-old has spent over 30 years at the county as a player, coach and manager.

He scored over 11,000 runs and took 908 wickets in a playing career which spanned from 1961 and 1980, winning the county championship in 1975.

And he returned to Grace Road as a coach in 1990 before becoming manager in 1992.

During that time the county enjoyed plenty of success, claiming the championship twice in three years in 1996 and 1998.

The club appointed Phil Whitticase as head coach last season, while Birkenshaw accepted a coaching role, recruiting and developing young players.

After the club announced his departure, he said: "I have enjoyed a long and happy career at Leicestershire.

"But I felt the time had come for me to consider a number of options regarding my future."

Leicestershire general manager Kevin Hill paid tribute to Birkenshaw's services.

"Jack's contribution to Leicestershire's success as a player, coach and manager has been immense," he said.
