Winning it for Ben
Ben Hollioake
Surrey will dedicate any success this season to Hollioake
The death of Ben Hollioake provided Surrey with extra motivation to beat Sussex in the opening round of the county season, according to stand-in captain Mark Butcher.

Butcher, deputising until Adam Hollioake returns from family duties in Australia, said emotion played a big part as Surrey started the season on a winning note.

"People at the club have used it (Ben's death) as a bit of a spur and everyone's been fantastic about it," Butcher said as Surrey sealed a 10-wicket win, the left-hander hitting 68 not out in the second innings.

"It's actually been easier than you think, and fortunately there's been enough of a break for people to really want to get on with the cricket."

Sussex, too, were running high on emotion after the death of Umer Rashid, who drowned to death just ten days after Hollioake's passing.

Surrey are widely regarded as the team to beat in the division one championship, and Butcher says that any trophies won this season will be done so in Ben's honour.

"Should we manage to come away with some silverware at the end of this year I'm sure the first thing said is that it will be dedicated to Ben's memory.

"The two guys who scored hundreds against Sussex (Ali Brown and Nadeem Shahid) were both unbelievably emotional afterwards, not for themselves but because they both stated their wish to score a century and dedicate it to Ben."

Butcher admitted the Surrey dressing room was a different place without the ebullient presence of Hollioake.

"There's various situations in the dressing room and you're expecting Ben to come up with one of his usual wisecracks but it doesn't appear.

Things are changing daily for Adam and his family out there
Mark Butcher
"But it's all around the place and it always will be."

It isn't definite when Adam will return to England to lead Surrey, but Butcher is prepared to fill in for as long as it takes.

"It very much depends on when Adam decides to come back.

"At the moment he thinks it will be for the start of the B&H zonal games, but things can change rapidly.

"So we won't know when he's coming back until he's definitely on the plane."
