Hildreth celebrates Lions call-up
James Hildreth
James Hildreth set to take the next step on the cricket ladder in India.
Somerset's James Hildreth was thrilled to be named in the England Lions squad for the Duleep Trophy later this month.

"I am absolutely delighted to have been selected for the England Lions tour to India," said the 23-year-old batsman.

"For me this is the next step on the ladder towards playing Test match cricket for my country which has always been my ambition."

Hildreth won his place with his form in India during the England Performance Programme just before Christmas.

James Hildreth, Born 9/9/1984
Scored 1,147 runs (Av. 52.13) Championship runs in 2007
Scored 3,774 runs (Av. 41.02) in 61 first-class matches

Playing for the EPP XI, Hildreth hit 134 off 130 balls in the first match, before following up with 63 in the second.

The former Millfield School student will report to Loughborough for a two-week training camp on Monday before setting off with the rest of the 13-man England 'A' squad to Mumbai on 23 January.

"This is a great opportunity for me to get outside and play cricket against some high-class opposition," added Hildreth, "as well as being excellent preparation for the forthcoming Somerset season competing in Division One of the County Championship."

Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose said: "James's selection is fantastic news for Somerset cricket all round.

"We always knew James had a wonderful natural ability.

"He was educated in the county at Millfield and came through the county academy.

James's application and consistency, allied to his huge natural talent, have put him head and shoulders above the majority of his contemporaries

Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose

"He decided against going onto higher education and signed as professional backing himself and his own ability.

"And, since he made his debut back in 2003, he has come on in leaps and bounds.

"He has not been over coached, and always been allowed to play his natural game.

"Last season he enjoyed his best season ever and proved himself to be an invaluable member of the double promotion winning side.

"He has added application and consistency to his game which, allied to his huge natural talent, has put him head and shoulders above the majority of his contemporaries."
